New Era for Tigers
Crown Ridge Sanctuary to Close, Big Cats Begin New Life at Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge
Ste. Genevieve, MO, and Eureka Springs, AR. – [August 18, 2025] – After nearly two decades of rescuing, caring for, and advocating for big cats, Crown Ridge Tiger Sanctuary will be permanently closing its doors in the fall of 2025. The sanctuary, founded in 2004, has played a vital role in educating the public and providing lifelong care for abused, neglected, and unwanted big cats.
“We are incredibly proud of the impact we’ve made and the lives we’ve touched – both feline and human,” said John Madigan, Operations Manager at Crown Ridge Tiger Sanctuary. “This place has been more than a sanctuary – it’s been a home, a mission, and a community. While it’s incredibly hard to say goodbye, we know our animals will be in good hands, and we take comfort in the legacy we’ve built together.”
As part of the sanctuary’s closure plan:
- Sebastian and Shakira, two of Crown Ridge’s beloved tigers, will be permanently rehomed to Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge (TCWR) in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. TCWR is a GFAS-accredited sanctuary with a shared mission of providing exceptional care and lifelong refuge for big cats.
- Thor, due to her advanced age, will remain at Crown Ridge to live out her life in familiar surroundings, cared for by the keepers she knows and trusts.
“Turpentine Creek has long admired the work of Crown Ridge, and we are honored to provide a forever home for Sebastian and Shakira,” said Tanya Smith, President of Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge. “We know how much these animals are loved, and we are committed to continuing that standard of care – ensuring they thrive in a safe, enriching environment.”
The final public tour at Crown Ridge Tiger Sanctuary will take place on Sunday, September 28, 2025. Lodging accommodations will remain open through October, offering supporters one last opportunity to experience the peace and beauty of the sanctuary grounds.
“I am truly grateful for our talented caregivers and the team at Turpentine Creek for carrying out the Mission of our Foundation, providing exceptional care and promoting the preservation and protection of these amazing animals. While the Tigers hold a special place in my heart, it brings me great joy knowing they will be cared for by the incredible team at Turpentine Creek. Sebastian and Shakira are in great hands.” said Loretta Scott, President of The Scott Foundation.
Both organizations encourage the public to stay connected through their websites and social media platforms, where they will share updates about Sebastian and Shakira’s transition, as well as continued care for Thor.
“We extend our deepest gratitude to every supporter, volunteer, staff member, and visitor who has walked this journey with us,” said Madigan. “Your compassion made our work possible, and your support will continue to ensure a bright future for these incredible animals.”
